Representation of gender within this clip in Harley Street

The clip in the popular TV Drama ‘Harley Street’ portrays a representation of the gender dominance that goes on within the world of business, as we watch a male doctor working his way up in the world of business.

As the episode begins we immediately see a medium shot of a group of young beautiful girls sat on a very classy sofa situated in what looks to be a very grand house. The girls are sat very poised, dressed in classy but flirty outfits. This links very well within the way they act towards the males in this episode. The camera then turns to a young man entering the room dressed in smart dark clothing, looking very dominant in the way he carries himself. Carrying what looks to be a brief case showing how the man looks professional however as the camera zooms in on the brief case he opens it up and we see a close up of a set of needles, this has been shown to indicate to the audience what this man is doing. This links to gender as it represents how the male is in charge. One of the girls relates to him as ‘Doctor’ as she sits down in front of him portraying the gender dominance of the male as he stands above her using a high angle shot as he injects her face with the botox showing his power towards the female, he is in charge of the situation and what is happening to her. Diegetic sound of background music has been used within this particular part to represent the reality of the situation.

The camera then moves to another young man shown on the phone representing his importance that he is a part of a business, with a young quiet girl sat next to him very poised, dressed in classy casual clothing. Representing how she is ‘his girl’ out of the many girls revolved around the room. The man shows his dominance towards the young girl as he tries to force her to get the botox not giving her a say in any of it as we see throughout the scene she does not say a word; the camera zooms into a close up of the young girls face presenting her flawless skin to show how she doesn’t need the botox. However, also to show her shaking her head hinting to the doctor secretly that she really doesn’t want to have the botox done. This makes the audience aware of what is happening, allowing them to understand the dominance this man has over this young girl and she is being manipulated into this situation.

Representation of 90210

90210 is based in California America around a group of teenagers in their senior year in high school, we get to see the variety of lifestyles they live and the drama that goes on within their dream lives.
90210 is based around drama, therefore many different camera angles are used to portray the different emotions each character is giving off. For example Naomi is recovering from a rape incident, leaving her scared and mortified, however after dealing with it for so long on her own she puts up a front although you can see in the way she acts, the pain beneath her eyes and that fake smile. Naomi's emotions are shown a lot through close ups so we as an audience are able to see the emotion she is feeling even if her friends can't. As she is one of the main characters a lot of the drama does revolve around her. Naomi is a feisty, confident character and is shown mainly in a tilt shot to show she has the power over other people as she is the one with all the money, this is portrayed in the way she carries herself and walks around as if she owns the place allowing her beauty and popularity to shine through, but we as an audience can still see that pain as the camera draws in on her. The lives of the Beverly Hill High students is set mainly around school  grounds and the beach, this straight away gives us an idea of the lifestyles the characters carry, being very wealthy a life most teenagers dream of. Many of the characters are shown in bright light, portraying their kindness and happy life, as the sun shines through California. However as drama begins to happen and the camera comes from a long shot into a close up you see the shadow come over the characters bringing darkness and tension to the situation. Music is also used withing 90210 such as non-diagetic sounds when they are on the beach happy music is being played to show the greatness of their life. Diagetic sounds are used to portray the reality such as the waves in the ocean as they crash against the surf boards and the engine of their cars as they drive around in their open top sports cars. Crab shots are used a lot within 90210 to show the characters surfing as they follow their movement throughout the ocean.

Analyses of 'The Shield'

The Shield is an American police drama starring:
Michael Chiklis
Glenn Close
Catherine Dent
Reed Diamond
Paula Garces
Walton Goggins
Michael Jace
Kenneth Johnson
Jay Karnes
David Marciano
Benito Martinez
Cathy Cahlin Ryan
David Rees Snell
CCH Pounder

'The Shield' uses many shot reverse shots within the tv drama used to show the conversation between the two people the camera is focusing on, whether it is with the police interviewing the victims or just a general conversation between two police officers. However there may be close up shots to show the emotion on the characters face, to create tension, also created with sound mixing used to heighten the dramatics, showing the audience a clearer view of the situation. Shot reverse shots are mainly used within medium shots to allow the viewers to see the setting around the characters.
'The Shield' uses many different sounds throughout such as ambient sound representing the illusion of reality as when you are watching a tv drama it is very effective to have every day details involved to allow us to feel the reality making it easier for us as the viewers to get into the program we are watching. It also uses diagetic sound similar to other sounds used creating the effect of reality as normal day noises are made such as the sound of the car door slamming, also the sound of the characters sneaking around as it is a police drama you expect to hear sudden sounds creating tension for the viewers. Synchronous sound is represented using the sound of a fire engine as it goes by, and also the trigger of the gun symbolising the crime, police aspect of the program. Similarly zooming in on the gun to represent the danger of it.
The police officer is shown to be dominant and important as we see her throw a criminal into the police car then the camera gradually moved up showing the police officers face. 'The Shield' also uses an edit called 'cut to black' used to represent time passing, e.g in this particular tv drama it would go from being at a crime scene to cutting straight to the police station to carry on with further investigation.

Sound...

Every sound tells a different story

Coronation street:
Ambient sound is used a lot to create the reality of the show. It is used to show home life having music in the background to portray the calmness of the scene, background music and chatter from the other people in the cafe used to show the privateness of the conversation they were having, that no one could hear to symbolise what the other people could hear, cars going past making it look more normal as if there was nothing on the roads it would not look believable, music in the club/pub and at the garage also creating a calm normal effect for the show.

Diagetic sound is also used to show the sounds that you would expect to hear on the show for example people talking, crying, and many other things. Synchronous sound has been used to show the sounds you can see for example glasses being placed on the table, symbolising how you would expect to hear the sound as you are watching it.

Sound motif is used to introduce the show also known as the theme tune: the music that is played every time the show is on and every time there is a break to reintroduce it or to end the scene.

Ugly Betty:
Ambient sound is also used a lot in Ugly Betty. Ambient sound in my opinion is one of the main sounds used in the media as they want it to seem real, creating more emotion and tension within the audience depending on the scene being shown.

Non-diagetic sound is used to create the tension and the mood of the show making it more effective and emotional for the audience to watch, making it more entertaining and almost making you feel as if what is happening is real. Sting has also been used for the same effect creating shock for the audience.

Synchronous and Asynchronous sounds are used in Ugly Betty. Synchronous sound has been used when you see Betty typing on the laptop when she is at work. This is a sound you are seeing as you hear it. Asynchronous sound has been used when Betty is talking however the camera is moved to the people that are listening showing their facial expressions allowing us to understand what they feel about what Betty is saying and also allowing us to understand what Betty is saying as she speaks and moves around the paper, showing their expressions for us to understand the meaning of it.
Sound motif is used to introduce a new scene wherever it may be, symbolising how the audience are able to recognise the show they are watching to make it memorable.

Two TV drama evaluations :)

Hollyoaks

In Hollyoaks they use a variety of camera angle from long shots to close ups. There are many close ups used to show the intensity within the show singling out the culprit of the main story line adding the atmosphere and mood to the TV drama.
An extreme long shot was used at the beginning of almost every scene to show the audience where we are watching, zooming into the set to show the characters we will be following in this part of the show. Tracking shots and panning shots were used a lot going back and forth from each character as they both speak to each other, this has been used to show who is speaking, using close ups to show the emotion on each characters face as they hear the reply creating the mood of the drama.
Mid shots were used to show the emotion between two character shown when two characters are hugging, you are able to see the emotion on both of their faces.
An arc shot was used as one of the characters gave a speech in the villiage allowing us to see all the characters in a semi circle sort of way. Point of view is also used a lot such as when Stephs family are watching the video she left when she dies we were watching this as their eyes.

CSI Miami

Close ups are the main camera shot used in this TV drama as it is a crime thriller, showing us the bodies as it zooms in onto the injuries that the victim has endured. Close ups have also been used a lot to show the emotion on the characters face, as they find out what has happened, creating the intensity to the show. Extreme long shots are used between every scene as it gives us a shot of Miami reminding us where the drama is set. Long shots are also used showing us the scene of the crime zooming into the victim or any objects that give clues to solving the crime. Point of view has been used to show a threat letter that links to the crime.Tilt shots are used to go down to or up to a symbolising object making it look scary such as a murder weapon.
